What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots to replace those of missing teeth. Shaped like screws, and made out of titanium, the surface of the dental implant is covered by tiny holes. Cells in your jawbone will synthesize new bone tissue, integrating the dental implant with your jaw, in a process referred to as osseointegration. This allows for a permanent implant that will look and act like a natural tooth. Dental implants are among the most predictable tooth replacement options available.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

The benefits of dental implants are many:

  • Permanent, long-lasting replacements for one or more missing teeth
  • Natural appearance
  • Convenient: they can be removed by patient
  • Strong bite
  • Improved oral health
  • Low maintenance
  • Eliminate jaw joint pain

How do dental implants compare to dentures?

Dental implants have a number of benefits over dentures. Implants do away with many of the inconveniences and weaknesses of dentures. Unlike dentures, dental implants are permanent and never need to be removed for maintenance or for cleaning. Dentures can look non-natural and can fit poorly, which may give way to difficulty with eating certain foods. Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth.

How long does the dental implants process take?

The dental implants process has several different stages:

The first phase is the detailed consultation and placement of the dental implants. Depending on the number of implants being placed and the complexity of the procedure, the dental implants procedure can take between 30 minutes and 3–4 hours. This is followed by a healing period, during which you may wear temporary teeth, until your replacement teeth are created and fitted.

The second phase of the procedure usually takes place 3–6 months after placing your implants. In this part of the process, we will uncover the top of your implants from under the gums, and a small metal extension is attached to the implant. At this time, we will also make any needed modifications, so that you may continue wearing your temporary teeth.

Creating and fitting your artificial tooth is the third phase of the procedure, and it typically takes place 2–6 weeks after the second phase. You will attend “try-in” sessions, during which we will ensure that the size, shape, and color of your new tooth is completely streamlined with your natural teeth and facial characteristics. This last phase takes 1–2 months, and the overall process usually requires 5–8 months.

Is the procedure painful?

During the procedure, the patient is placed under an anesthetic to eliminate any discomfort. You may be prescribed pain medication for any discomfort after the surgery, but typically there is minimal post-procedure pain.

How long will implants last and do they require special care?

Dental implants can remain in place for more than 40 years, as long the patient keeps up with routine follow-up appointments, regular dental check-ups, and good oral hygiene.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

The dental implants procedure requires adequate bone tissue in the jaw. If you have recently had a tooth extraction, you are most likely also healthy enough to have an implant. If you have any questions regarding your candidacy and dental implants, please do not hesitate to contact us at Brush & Floss Dental Center. We are more than happy to assist you with your dental hygiene needs.

Brush & Floss Dental Center’s philosophy is that your wellbeing should be independent of your budget. Nevertheless, we understand that the decision is not an easy one to make. We offer payment plan options, and accept CareCredit, a credit line designed to give patients access to the healthcare they deserve.
