Mini-Implants

Mini-Implants | Stratford, CT | Brush & Floss Dental Center

While dental implants are a great solution for missing or decaying teeth, inadequate bone tissue may compromise their stability and strength. The implant will exert force on the jawbone which must be well distributed, otherwise the implant may fail. As an alternative, Brush & Floss Dental Center in Stratford, CT offers the latest in mini-implants. Mini-implants can be used to place one or more prostheses which are designed to look and feel just like natural teeth.

Being smaller than conventional dental implants, mini-implants can better distribute their weight across the placement on the jawbone. It does this by avoiding placing undue pressure on weaker parts of your bone or gums, where the tissue may be less dense or may have extensively deteriorated.  Using the latest and greatest in Cone Beam CT imaging, Dr. Hoos will prepare and install the mini-implant(s) along the strongest surface of your jawbone.  This makes mini-implants ideal for elderly patients and for those who may suffer from jawbone loss or receding gum tissue. The mini-implant treatment is oftentimes more affordable than traditional dental implants as well.

Because mini-implants are smaller than their full-sized counterparts, Dr. Hoos will use a pilot drill to generate the placement for the implant. This makes the procedure much less intrusive and far more comfortable for the patient. The surgery will be relatively painless, with the patient being administered a local anesthetic, and will require an average of 1–2 hours to complete. Mini-implants are installed in a procedure similar to that of dental implants, where Dr. Hoos will directly fasten the mini-implants into the jaw bone.

Since the mini-implant is directly secured to the jawbone, they are strong and capable of withstanding reasonable pressures soon after the procedure. Patients may eat with their new teeth a couple of hours after the surgery!  The healing time will typically be much shorter than for dental implants. While oftentimes the procedure results in minimal post-surgery discomfort, any that may be felt typically passes within 48 hours. Furthermore, many of the complications of larger dental implants are generally avoided. Should any complication arise, the small size of mini-implants usually eliminates the need for bone grafting.

The Procedure

Although the surgery is relatively simple, it does require more planning than a conventional dental implant. If installed properly, mini-implants have no or few disadvantages compared to full-sized dental implants. The quality of the surgery is in large part determined by the preparation taken and Dr. Hoos has the expertise necessary to take into account the bite patterns and is able to optimize the placement of the mini-implant. At Brush & Floss Dental Center, in Stratford, CT we have an established track record of high quality mini-implants. Our mini-implants are known for their exceptional durability and strength.

The success of the procedure also depends on the patient’s ability to keep up with proper cleaning. Just like with natural teeth, implants must be brushed and flossed regularly to prevent degeneration of oral health. The patient is also urged to regularly schedule check-ups with Dr. Hoos so that he and his staff can monitor the progress of your mini-implants.
